There is an old saving about a "penny saved is a penny earned".
I say that a meal in the freezer is a dollar saved at the drive through.
Why are people surprised that 5 O'Clock comes around each and every day? Why is it even more shocking that children come from all corners of the universe to ask, "What's for dinner?" With a little bit of planning and a a box of zip lock bags, you can be prepared for the dinner question each and every day.
The trick is to begin by making a master list of every recipe that you know how to prepare. Once a week, choose to double a freezable recipe. Simply prepare your family's dinner and set half of the meal aside. After dinner, freeze the remaining serving and write on the bag with a sharpie pen. Be sure to include the contents of the bag as well as any cooking instructions. For about 4 weeks continue to double recipes and freeze them into bags. After about a month you will have at least 4 ready to go meals. On those crazy days you'll be able to reach into the freezer and pull out a ready to heat meal. What a relief!
Great freezable meals:
Spaghetti Sauce (I know you can buy jars, but the idea is homemade meals)
Stew
Soup
lasagna
chili
Another great family feeding tip is find great crock pot recipes. Nothing beats throwing a few ingredients into a crock pot on a busy day. Turn it on low and go about your hectic day. When you walk into the house in the late afternoon, you will be greeted with the aroma of a completed dinner. Need some easy ideas to get you started?
Chicken chili:
Add frozen chicken breasts, can of diced tomatoes, can of pinto beans, can of kidney beans and spices to the crock-pot. Cook on low all day. Adjust quantities to suit your tastes and family size.
Easy Chicken and tortillas:
Add Chicken breast to crock pot and cover with salsa. Cook all day on low. Shred and serve with tortillas, cheese, and all your favorite fixings.
Shredded BBQ pork sandwiches
Add pork roast to crockpot. cover with beef broth. Cook on low all day. Do not save liquid. Shred pork and top with your favorite BBQ sauce. Heat in crock until warm. Serve on your favorite rolls or bread.
Take advantage of an afternoon or weekend at home by preparing a meal or two to be frozen for later. Double any recipe that can be doubled and save half for another meal.
You do not need to be surprised that it is 5 o'clock again today. You can already know what you are making for dinner. http://www.HowtoFeedanArmy.blogspot.com
